Questions and Answers

If Computers were Cars,'"If General Motors had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has,

Q) we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, GM issued a press release stating: "If General Motors had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason, you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Selling cars in the UK?

Q) Hi I am a member of the public. I want to buy and sell cars. I wish to know the paper/document process involved in selling cars. If I buy a car, do I have to transfer the car documents into my name before I then sell the car, or can I instantly resell the car. If I have to transfer the car documents into my name, what documents and how long would it take?

A) Well if you become registered sole trader then i think you can just sell them on. Else if you have to register the documents It will be Registeration document V5C only It should take between 2 to 4 weeks

Why do English Cars have an indicator switch on the left and Australian cars on the right with a RHD car?

Q) Why do European cars (Left hand drive) have the indicator switch on the left of the steering wheel column and Australian Cars have the indicator switch on the right hand side (Right hand drive) of the steering wheel column, yet British right hand drive cars don't follow that pattern (Indicator switch side matching the driving side) and they have the indicator switch on the left of a Right hand drive car? Is it simply because European Left Hand drive cars move the steering wheel column and switches untouched to the right hand side when manufacturing and configuring for Britain .... Or is there some other logical reason? As someone who has driven European left hand drive cars and Australian right hand side cars, its doesn't feel logical with driving style.

A) Some cars have the indicator stalk on the left, some on the right. The location is entirely down to the car manufacturer, not where the car is sold (the same applies to vans and trucks, too).

Car Tax banding! Old cars and banding?

Q) I see car that car tax banding only applies to vehicles newer than 2001. What about cars older than that? Do they come under the highest tax bracket regardless of size emmissions etc etc? I don't see why I should pay £300 then £400 for road tax when my car is just as efficiant as some of the newer cars or more efficiant than the likes of modern 4x4's So does this mean that we're going to be paying £300 next year and £400 the year after?

A) newer cars normally have lower emissions (per mile)

My cars crushed but how do i prove it?

Q) About a year ago my car broke down, been a skint student i just left it parked up a short work from my house. A week or two later i received a parking ticket in the post so went round to find my car which was gone. I recived 6 more parking tickets through the post and asumed my car had been towed away by the council i paid the tickets and assumed they would send a letter about getting my car back which they didnt. It was a crap car so i wasnt that bothered and left it. When my tax ran out however i got a letter asking me to renew it or get fined. I wasn't sure what to do so i decleared it as SORN now its up for renew how do i tell them my cars dead????????? HELP

A) Never assume it is dead, and never assume it has been towed away by the council. By law, the police or the council would require to put a notice on the car and have it there for 21 days before they can legally impound it, unless it is parked in a dangerous manner in which case it would be towed automatically. After it's been lifted the registered keeper and registered owner would be contacted rearding the uplift, and advised of any charges due for impound and return. Another mistake was paying for the parking tickets which would identify where and when the offence took place. You are technically accepting liability. Had you reported it missing presumed stolen to the police at the time, they would have been able to do the necessary enquiries as to whether it had been imponded or not. I think it is safe to assume that the car has been stolen, and is still being used one way or the other. You need to contact the police, and explain the circumstances, but as you are still recorded with the DVLA that you are the reistered owner/keeper, you will be held liable for any road tax and resultant fines due if you declare it SORN and it is not....... The minute it is caught on the road you will get a fine in the post from DVLA. Contact the Police, now.

Cars: a bad invention or a good one?

Q) Are cars a bad invention or a good one? sure, they get us around much fatser than on foot, but in the medieval times with the lack of cars everyone were much healthier in that they walked everywhere and this kept them healthy, but cars and other vehicles do not allow for this. Also with the invention of cars, motorbikes, etc. the amount of deaths from driving carelessly and from road rage is also a problem. Not only this but were also polluting the air with all sorts of gasses. so are cars a good invention or a bad one?

A) Good invention.

Cars retaining a cool temperature, is there a way?

Q) With the so-manieth child dying in an overheated car it makes me wonder: is there a way to make cars so they keep a constant temperature? Apart from children or pets dying, there's also burning your bum on seats, melting into goo before you've even left for work... I know cars have airconditioning but you cannot keep that on all day. Is there any way that the concept of the freezerbag could be used on cars? Is anyone working on ways to bannish the car/oven syndrome?

A) Some cars do run aircon all day long. It's just not found as standard in the UK.

Two cars set off from the same point to travel the same journey. The first car has a start of six minutes>>

Q) before the second car leaves. If the first car travels at 70 kph and the second car travels at 75 kph, how many kilometres will be travelled when the cars are level?

A) The answer is 105K. 'Ron' gets the right answer but doesn't explain how. MBK also gets the right answer, but by a method of trial and error. The correct methodology is. after 6 minutes the first car has travelled 70x(6/60) = 7k. The second car gains at the rate of 75/5 over the first car = 15. Distance required is 15x7k = 105k.

buying cars which have been from leasing companies, banks or finance companies?

Q) im looking to buy a car from a garage who get there cars from banks leasing or finance companies. im abit unsure what the car has been used for previousley? are they from people who couldn't afford the finance on them or from people who work in banks as a company car. Will they be in good condition if they were a lease car?

A) Typically a lease vehicle should be as good or better value than a used vehicle that has gone from owner to owner. A leased vehicle is apt to be one that has had a regular schedule of maintenance and more than likely driven by someone that could more than afford to finance an automobile. In the US a lease is more advantageous for tax purposes than a finance and there is no hassles at the end of the lease concerning selling or trading your vehicle

Touring cars?

Q) Do you thing Touring cars has lost the plot? I mean in to the past, like the early to mid ninetys, where proper sallon cars raced against each other, Ford,Vauxhall,Peugoue, nissan,Renault, and Honda. now its all hatch back cars, and only three main car makers. I gess most are looking towards formula 1 and rallying..but even with ralluing car makers are pulling out right left and centre.

A) Yes, I agree. Hot hatches make a good series but touring cars should be based on larger chassis. The Ford Mondeo was the last decent sized touring car. My son was a test driver for the Mondeo racing effort and here is the problem..... the Mondeo had three electronic differential controls, a very sophisticated gearbox, an engine mounted so low you could not see it when you lifted the bonnet. It all .... it cost a fortune and therein lies the problem. I would like to see more of a production based series with bigger cars like Audi A4 , BMW 5, Ford, Lexus, Mazda, etc. I would only allow standard bodyshells and no seam welding. The roll cage would be a bolt in standard item. Finally I would allow engine and weights that gave all cars the same power to weight ratio and a hard control tyre that would last a weekend. Yes, they would be slow but spectacular to watch

cars???????

Q) ok so im going to college and im totally broke cause my part time job pays like nothing hah. but i need a car really bad but ive only got like 1200-1500 dollars to work with i could wait and save more money but i really need one do you think its crazy to try and find a car this cheap? ive found some 4runners and a couple other suvs on craigslist but im worried their that cheap cause theres something wrong with them. so whats the best way to find a car for cheap?

A) It is hard to find a decent car for that price now-a-days. I'd search for cars that have a good track record like Hondas or Toyotas, and before buying them, have them inspected by a qualified mechanic. Have you thought of getting a moped or an electric bicycle? They may be cheaper. With the electric bike, you can pedal for exercise or use electricity to go faster. I believe you just need to plug in to recharge.

cars!!!?!!?

Q) im almost 16 and hopefully will be getting a car soon! my parents are verrry old style and want me to have a safe, newly equipped car thats not the trendiest or the prettiest or the most expensive. theyll probably get me a used one thats in good shape but will definitely make me pay the insurance. im glad theyre making me work for what i want though. the problem is, i want a small car so i wont use too much money on gas. any suggestions? looking for something around 2002 - now

A) I would suggest that you shop around, depending on what makes and models of vehicles that appeal to you, test drive a few before deciding on a particular make of vehicle. Personally I would get a Honda Accord, or Toyota Camry, both are excellent on gas mileage, and pretty nicely equipped too. Depending on where you live if you get snow, you might look into a Subaru or any other car that offers all wheel drive. Good luck on your purchase, and if you have any further questions feel free to email me at wsevier@yahoo.com.

Cars.......................?

Q) Which is the best car? 2007 Camry, used saab 9-3, used audi a4, new Mazda 3, used mazda 6? Why????

A) Depends what you want the car for. If you want luxury, the saab and the audi would be better. If you want a super reliable car that will probably make it up to 300k miles, thent he camry. Even if you don't drive the car that long, the camry will have the best resale value. Only problem with the camry is it's boring. The 2 mazdas are ok, not as reliable as the camry but more than the audi or saab, plus it's the cheapest out of the cars you listed. The saab has the worst reliability out of the ones you listed followed by the audi, though audi's problems are mostly electronics related. The engine itself is great.
